Client

  • OCEANA is the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation. It has been a leader in protecting and restoring marine biodiversity and abundance for nearly 15 years. It runs direct policy-oriented and science-based campaigns to advocate for increasing marine biodiversity, restoring ocean abundance and protecting habitat. Since its inception in 2001, Oceana has won over 100 campaigns for the oceans and protected more than 1 million square miles of ocean habitat; it succeeded in stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas and protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing.

Website

Challenge

  • Improve Dialogue & Acquisition
Oceana wanted to build Azula, a content and advertising platform that would act as a “Buzzfeed” for oceans. This platform needed the ability to deploy content designed to acquire subscribers in a user friendly manner. The basic design was provided to the firm, but they needed to build the platform entirely off WordPress, using plugins instead of custom code and it had to be done within a short period of time.

Solution

  • An Optimized Website
We built Azula.com with sophisticated analytics and advertising features to drive content consumption, as well as made it an SEO and SEM optimized website. The site supported infinite scrolling, auto-loaded recommended content, and had intuitive social sharing plug-ins. In addition, we provided a complete training manual, as well as continued tech support for the site, as it needed stabilising and quick bug fixes.

Additional editorial capabilities and social media features were included in the site to facilitate the digital marketing efforts of their remote team of writers and advertising to generate revenue from their content.

Result

  • Inspiring Conversations, Increased Awareness
Azula.com’s responsive nature and social media features delivered several benefits. First, it made it easier for users to browse the website on their mobile devices and share the articles and posts they like on social media, driving increased views, lower bounce rates, and increased content consumption. These social media shares often led to inspiring conversations among supporters and their followers and raised awareness about ocean conservation issues among the public.
